Iffley Road project
The Bullingdon Road
In the early summer of 2018 I was riding my motorcycle along the Iffley Road as I have done many times before but this time I was struck by the individuality of the roads to my right as I rode into Oxford. At that moment I had the idea of a series of thirteen paintings showing each of the roads heading north from Iffley Road, starting with Howard and ending with Circus.
I painted on old woodworm-ravaged oak panels. The skeletal form of Wadham College’s new residential block between Charles and Percy Street now places the paintings in a specific time in the history of the Iffley Road and thus Oxford itself.
